Let’s talk ageing and the pressures of remaining youthful as the years pass by…

It’s important that we understand what causes ageing and how we can put the breaks on and improve the tendency for our skin to age. Using cosmeceutical skincare products as well as in clinic treatments all help to put the breaks on natural ageing.

Intrinsic and extrinsic skin ageing

According to ‘The Nursing times’ article – Anatomy and physiology of ageing : the skin – published on 27th November 2017 – The skin ages both intrinsically (chronologically from within) and extrinsically (due to external factors). Intrinsic skin ageing results from the passage of time. It occurs within the skin, due to reductions in dermal mast cells, fibroblasts and collagen production, and a flattening of the junction between the epidermis and dermis. Intrinsically aged skin is unblemished, smooth, pale, dry and less elastic with fine wrinkles (Landau, 2007).

Extrinsic skin ageing is caused by environmental factors such as:

  • Smoking
  • Diet
  • Exposure to chemicals
  • Trauma
  • Exposure to UV radiation (photoageing).

Collagen

Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein, providing strength and support to the skin. The collagen content of the dermis decreases by 1% per year throughout adult life (Rigel et al, 2004). In addition, collagen itself changes from well-organised bundles of fibres in young skin to fragmented and dis-organised fibres in older skin; it also loses its interwoven extensions with elastin fibres, which in youth enable the skin to regain its shape after deformation (Graham-Brown, 2004).

Fibroblast activity decreases with age: these cells shrivel and have fewer epidermal growth factor receptors. There is an associated drop in collagen synthesis, an atrophy of collagen bundles and an increase in the levels of metalloproteinases and enzymes that degrade collagen. As a consequence, collagen is of poor quality and wound healing is impaired.

As collagen fibres decrease in number, rupture, cross-link and stiffen, their capacity to bind water diminishes and the skin loses elasticity and becomes wrinkled. Wrinkles appear to be due not so much to the degeneration of elastin fibres, as previously thought, but to a decreased water-holding power of collagen and mucopolysaccharides (Richards and Edwards, 2014). This is why daily skincare products are so important to sit next to your in-clinic anti ageing treatments. Introducing a growth factor serum or hyaloronic acid serum like the Jane Scrivner Bioluronic buzz to your daily routine is so important and can really supplement your professional treatment courses.

Radiofrequency treatment – how it works

When radiofrequency is conducted through the skin, it penetrates down to the subcutaneous layers, producing an exothermic reaction – meaning it is a catalyst for heat production within the body. In fact, the skin can heat up to 38–40 degrees during radiofrequency treatments.

This has many physiological effects on the dermis, the primary being tightening, firming and brightening, and this is because the thermal reaction causes the contraction of collagen in the short term and collagen synthesis in the long term, tightening the underlying skin structures without damaging the top layer.

It is particularly effective on areas that commonly suffer from skin laxity such as the brows, barcode lines above the lips, jowls, jaw and neck, ensuring skin looks lifted even after just one application.
