Devising a good foot care routine is essential to maintain foot health and prevent problems occurring. The skin on your feet is 12 times thicker than anywhere else on your body and demands care and attention in order to keep your feet fit and well. Lets look at the important steps to take and which products are best to use.

Cleansing your feet twice daily is so important

Cleansing should not compromise the skin. Several practices help clean the skin in a safe, non-compromising manner. Harsh soaps that strip stratum corneum lipids and proteins, can be avoided by using products with fewer or milder surfactants and more phospholipids.

Minimisng the use of soaps (frequency) and limiting the area where they are used, using liquid or balms rather than bar soaps, and using a soft cloth and cooler water are some strategies to reduce skin disruption. Surfactants can cause immediate after-wash tightness. Stripping of the lipids and protein alteration in the stratum corneum leads to barrier damage, loss of water from the skin, erythema, irritation, and itch.

The Prendè Cleansing balm is a mild, moisturising cleanser providing cleansing benefits without negatively altering the hydration and viscoelastic properties of skin. Skin cleansers combined with moisturisers help replace and repair the barrier disrupted by cleaning. Natural moisture boosting properties in the Prende cleansing balm can mitigate damage by depositing oils and lipids, during washing and provide a deep clean to tired tootsies.

Moisturising

Moisturising is important. The softness of skin correlates with its hydration status. The stratum corneum skin barrier prevents water loss. With age the ability to limit transepidermal water loss is impaired. The most important factor for healthy skin is adequate moisture. A moisturised skin has strength and stretch and creates equilibrium in the skin which reduces the likelihood of suffering from bacteria and fungal infection and also reduces the chances of ulceration on weight bearing areas.

Moisturisers function in several different ways. Some, such as petrolatum-type products or
silicone, may provide an immediate physical barrier that helps trap or prevent water loss from the stratum corneum. We suggest a tiered emollient approach post cleansing. Using a skin and nail oil first, then applying a urea based cream to lock in the moisture through its humectant properties.

The science and principles behind our Medi Pedi and Prende Podicure treatments

  • The Podicure tiered emollient approach contributes to clinical efficacy and cosmetic elegance by imparting a smooth, soft texture to the skin surface. Helping to keep the skin supple at the same time as reducing water loss from the epidermis – the outer layer of skin.
  • Ureka is a humectant that improves the capacity of the skin’s outer layers (epidermis) to increase moisture by attracting water from the dermis to the epidermis.
  • The combination of occlusive and humectant ingredients provides complementary actions in achieving and maintaining epidermal hydration and barrier function.

Our aim is to deeply cleanse the skin, gently buff away dead skin cells and then hydrate the skin with a quadruple moisturising action. We finish with the beautifully healthy Dr’s Remedy nail polish.
